    Man I just can't seem to stop using my shoulders for bench press. I mean I know that they're going to be used regardless, but my shoulders are more sore than my chest after doing a set.

    I know I'm supposed to keep them down and shoulder blades retracted and I'm trying but guess I'm not doing it well enough. Goddammit it's frustrating.

    He's got the angle backward. The bar should go up the other way like you are doing a benchpress. If you go to other instructors who are teaching the bench press you push the bar at an angle going towards the rack not straight up. So turn the direction around where the bar angles toward you not away from you on the Smith machine.

    I tend to find that I do much less weight on a smith machine.

    This is a very bad exercise for your shoulders. You need an angled smith machine for bench pressing. The barbell should start at your lower chest and end at eye-level just like when you bench press with a regular barbell. This straight smith machine will cause you to make an unnatural lift and fuck up your shoulders.

    The Smith Machine is awesome if you want to waste your time! I only use the 45lb bar and plates for flat/incline/decline then finish with cable cross overs and dumbbells
